American astronaut, was born in
Wheeler, Texas, and was educated at the University of Texas. He was
a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy and received pilot training.
Bean was selected as an astronaut in 1963. he was command pilot for
the backup crew of the Gemini X mission in 1966.
