Brevetted 2nd Lieutenant, 2nd Artillery, July 1, 1847; served in war with Mexico, 1847-1848, Vera Cruz, Puebia, and City of Mexico; 2nd Lieutenant, 3rd Artillery, Sept. 8, 1847, 1st Lieutenant, May 26, 1851, Captain, May 14, 1861; Lieutenant-Colonel, 2nd Ohio Artillery, Aug. 1, 1863; Colonel, Aug. 15, 1863, honorably mustered out of volunteer service, Aug. 23, 1865; Major 3rd Artillery, Feb. 5, 1867; Lieutenant-Colonel, 2nd Artillery, Apr. 19, 1882; Colonel, 3rd Artillery, Dec. 1, 1883; retired, May 22, 1891; advanced to rank of brigadier-general, retired, by act of Apr. 23, 1904.
