Fire At Clearfield Store
A shed to the rear of the Clearfield Store operated by Harold Buss, was completely
destroyed by fire yesterday morning of unknown origin.

The Nazareth fire department rushed to the scene, but did not go into action as
the entire building was already a mass of flames.  The estimated damage is
approximately $100.

Young Mother Burns To Death  --  Brother Rescues Baby From Raging Flames

Mrs. Lottie Hawk, 19-year-old mother and wife of Paul Hawk, residing along the blacktop road leading from Clearfield to Wind Gap, was burned to death Tuesday afternoon at about five o'clock when fire destroyed their home.  The cause of the blaze is unknown as only she and a 15-month-old daughter were in the home at the time.

The flames were discovered by Mrs. Hawk's brother, Clark Mackes, a WPA worker upon returning from work.  Although the entire one-story structure was in flames when discovered, Mr. Mackes rushed to the door of the dwelling, opened it and found his sister on the floor in flames.  He pulled her body outside, but she was dead when taken from the blaze.  The baby, heard whining under a bed, was rescued through a window in the rear of the building, after receiving burns about the arms and face.  Baby Pauline was rushed to Bette Hospital, Easton, where her condition is reported fair.

The mother, Mrs. Paul Hawk, is survived by her husband and daughter; her parents
Mr. and Mrs. David Mackes; three sisters, Laura and Evelyn at home and Mrs.
Walter Paulus, of Stockertown; eight brothers, William and Walter of Wind Gap;
Clinton of Bethlehem; Clark of Point Phillis; Warren of Allentown; George of
Clearfield and David and Norman at home.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home of Herbert Bensing, of Moorestown, Saturday afternoon at two o'clock.

Getz, Harold - 1937

Retail Division Organized By Chamber Of Commerce  --  Retailers Now Solicited; To Have Regular Round Table Conferences

The Strengthening of a weak link of the local Chamber of Commerce is now being
sought by members of that body in the organization of a local Merchants' Retail
Division.  Several meetings have already been conducted by the committee headed
by Harold Getz, proprietor of The Leader Store, in an effort of establishing
sound co-operation among local businesses houses.

It is proposed that each committee within the Retail Division appointed to
represent the different lines of merchandise will bring about a thorough
understanding and go a long way toward solving the many problems faced from time
to time by the retailers.

The Retailers Division will always have the support of the Chamber in sponsoring
movements and funding worth-while activities.  The Committee is making a store-
to-store canvass now and expects to make encouraging reports at the next meeting.

Kichline, Monroe T - 1937

Monroe T. Kichline, 72 years old, for many years a constable of town, died Sunday evening of a heart attack at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pauley, 24 North New Street.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Pauley and one grandchild.  Mr. Kichline was a member of Farmersville Reformed congregation and of Nazareth Lodge, No. 1000, (1099??), I.O.O.P.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Pauley.  The Rev. H.J. Ehret, of Bethlehem, Reformed pastor at Farmersville church officiated and interment was made in the Easton Heights cemetery.

Fitch, John - 1874

The First Steamboat
His name was John Fitch.  Twenty years before the great experiment of Fulton and Livingston, on the Hudson, a steamboat was constructed and put into operation in Philadelphia, under his sole direction, and was found to go at the rate of eight miles an hour.

He was considered, in his day, as quite visionary, and being a poor man, found it difficult to command the means to make his experiment. "Had his means been equal to the accomplishment of his designs, there can be no doubt that he would now hold undisputed the honor of having given to the country this most noble and useful invention".

He at last became discouraged and disheartened, and ended his days by suicide, and lies buried at Bardstown, Kentucky.

Turner, Jack - 1882

The Choctaw Courier in its last publication has an editorial in justification of the action of the people of Choctaw County in the hanging of Jack Turner, the insurrectionist.  It appears much important evidence has not been made public because of its bearing on the case of the 6 imprisoned coadjutors of Turner.

Henry Sims living near Simpkinsville, Monroe Co. attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat from ear to ear.  Dr. Chapman was called in after a lapse of 24 hours and found Sims in critical condition.  He has a wife and 6 children.

E.R. Adams was born in Pontolock, MS in 1846.  He joined the Confederate Army and after the War settled in Mobile where he married Ida Sheldon.  They moved to Butler Co. in 1885.  He was the son of the Hon. Samuel Adams.  Death date was not given.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ernst, residing at East Lawn, revealed the marriage of their son, David W. Ernst, of Flemington N.J., to Miss Bertha Johnson, of Flemington, N. J.  The ceremonies took place at Trenton, on Tuesday, February 23rd, and the couple were attended by a nephew and niece of the bride's who also reside at Lambertsville.

The bridegroom who lived at East Lawn until he reached the age of sixteen, attended the Leibert School in that community after which he removed to Flemington where has been operating a garage business for a period of 25 years.

Since the newspaper article date and the date in the photo differ so much, I'm inclined to think that the 'mug shots' are from the prison in which she did her time.  Also, the newspaper article is from San Jose, California, and the 'mug-shots' are from Santa Clara, Nat. Minnesota.

Palmer's Union Square Theatre, spring of 1872; left Union Square Theatre Company to star in "Conscience", 1876; was playing in Brooklyn Theatre when it caught fire, Dec. 5, 1876 and was in Southern Hotel, St. Louis, when it burned, 1877.  By coolness saving own life as well as that of brother; traveled with own company until 1904; best remembered for performance in "Frou, Frou", "Called Back", "The Double Marriage", "Pauvrette", Ogarita in "The Sea of Ice", and the blind girl in "The Two Orphans".  Played the role of Louise more than 4,000 times.
