Red Cross Society, and as special commissioner for The Outlook; went to
Martinique for The Outlook to study volcano Mont Pele, May, 1902; went to
Japan, Mar.., 1904, to report Russo-Japanese War for The Outlook; on staff
McClure's Magazine, 1907, The Outlook, 1909; vice president Medina Tribune

First prominent position that of principal violincello player in court orchestra, Stuttgart; heard in concerts throughout Europe before coming to U.S. as solo violincellist Metropolitan Orchestra, New York, 1886; since then has been connected with Theodore Thomas', Seidl's, and other orchestral organizations as soloist and conductor. Bandmaster 22nd Regiment Band, New York, since 1894; conductor Pittsburg, Pa., Orchestra, 1898-1904. Victor Herbert's New York Orchestra since 1904.
Composer : "The Captive" (oratorio written for and performed at Worcester, Mass., Festival), "Prince Ananias"; "The Wizard of the Nile"; "The Serenade"; "Cyrano de Bergerac"; "The Ameer"; "The Viceroy"; "The Idol's Eye"; "The Fortune Teller"; "The Singing Girl"; "Babette"; "Babes n Toyland"; "It Happened in Nordland" (all comic operas)' also several compositions for orchestra, songs and a concert for violincello and orchestra. Member National institute of Arts and Letters. Wrote score for play "The Only Girl", produced, London, 1915.
