Helmann, John - 1888

Helmann, John, Miner.  Age 30.
August 4, 1888, 2nd District, South Side Miner Colliery, Westmoreland County.
Instantly killed by a fall of slate.  There was a boy fifteen years old that warned him about the slate ten minutes before he was killed, but it was of no use.

Pearson, John O., Miner.  Age 26.
July 23, 1888, 2nd District, Penn Shaft No. 2, Westmoreland County.
Instantly killed by a fall of slate.  He had only been mining coal three months.

Gardner, Charles, Miner.  Age 49.  Married.  One orphan.
June 14, 1888, 2nd District, Yough Slope Colliery, Westmoreland County.
Was fatally injured by a fall of slate and died three hours afterwards.

Instantly killed by a fall of slate and coal.

February 15, 1888, 2nd District, Port Royal Colliery, Westmoreland County.
Was instantly killed by a powder blast by going back to the shot too soon.

Aston, Henry, Miner.  Age 58.  Married.  Seven orphans.
January 25, 1888, 2nd District, Greensburg Mine, Westmoreland County.
Instantly killed by a fall of coal.

McCafferty, Charles, Miner.  Age 35.  Married.  Three orphans.
January 3, 1888, 2nd District, Alexandria Mine, Westmoreland County.
Was severely injured by a fall of coal and died on the 4th.  He had not taken proper care to sprag the coal.

October 3, 1888, 1st District, Umpire Colliery, Fayette County
Instantly killed by a lump of coal falling on his head from the tipple.

September 24, 1888, 1st District, Knob Colliery, Washington County
Fatally killed by falling slate.  Died on the 25th.  On the day of the accident, deceased and an elder brother were working together.
