SOME “ACTOR”
Young Groft and His Confederate Use Clever Ruse to Get “5-Spot.”
Earl Martin, of near Hanover, was arrested on Saturday by Chief Kiser for being implicated with
Claude Groft in the theft of a number of chickens from Mrs. Thomas Shildt, of near Mt. Rock,
Adams county, last Thursday night.
It will be recalled that Groft had been arrested last Friday and is now under bail for court.
The chickens were stolen from Groft’s grandmother, an aged and hard working woman.
That Groft is some “actor” is demonstrated by a “stunt” he is said to have pulled off some time
ago, of which his old grandmother was again the victim.
He is said to have gone to her home and told the old lady he was being chased by an officer and
if she would give him a “five spot” it would keep him out of jail. A few moments later it is
said his “confederate” appeared and walking in the house placed his hands on Groft saying: “I
have you now, so come with me.”
Groft, it is alleged then turned to his grandmother and once more made a plea to be kept from
the law’s clutches. The old lady’s heart was touched and she went up stairs and came down with
the “fiver.”
The “officer” it is stated took the money and left the house. A few hours later it is said
both were seen spending the money for “booze.”
STOLE GRANDMOTHER’S CHICKENS.
Claude Groft, formerly of McSherrystown, was arrested by Chief Kiser Friday afternoon for the
theft of a lot of chickens said to belong to his grandmother, Mrs. Thomas Shildt, of near Mt.
Rock.
After being locked up the accused confessed where the chickens had been stolen.
Later in the day he was turned over to Officer John L. Daugherty, of McSherrystown. He was
given a hearing before Squire Geo. L. Rice, and gave bail for court.

Tobias H. Fleshman, of South St., Midway, who has been at the York hospital for
several months undergoing treatment for gangrene of the right leg, does not seem
to be improving. Mr. Fleshman has undergone two operations upon the leg, one
below the knee, when he went to the hospital, and two weeks ago it was found
that the disease was advancing and the limb was amputated above the knee.

WOMAN ATTEMPTS SUICIDE
Young Wife Of John Eltz, Near New Oxford, Takes Arsenic.
Family Troubles Said to Be the Cause – is the Mother of Two Children – Not the
First Time She Attempted Self-Destruction – Will Recover.
Considerable excitement was created in New Oxford on Sunday evening, when a
rumor prevailed that Mrs. John Eltz, of near that place, attempted to end her
life by taking poison.
The rumor was later confirmed, when Dr. J. L. Sheetz was summoned to the Eltz
home, where he found the young wife suffering from arsenic poisoning, and he
learned that the drug was taken with suicidal intent. He immediately
administered an antidote, which counteracted the effects of the poison and the
woman has now almost completely recovered.
Another rumor is current that this is not the first attempt Mrs. Eltz has made
to end her life. Domestic trouble is said to be the cause. Continual worry, it
is stated, has so prayed upon her mind that at times she is irrational, and it
is then she makes attempts at self-destruction.
Mrs. Eltz’s maiden name was Loss, and she is only about 20 years of age. She is
the mother of two children. They were former residents of Straban township,
Adams county, but have been living in the vicinity of New Oxford for several
years.
The husband is a tenant on the Nichols Lingg farm, near that place, which was
the scene of the near tragedy on Sunday evening.

FAMILY HOMELESS
Dwelling of Curtis Deatrick, Near East Berlin, Destroyed by Fire
Last Saturday the two-story frame dwelling of Curtis Deatrick, near East Berlin,
was destroyed by fire, together with the contents, with the exception of a couch
and a few small articles. Loss about $2,000.
Mr. and Mrs. Deatrick were in a field planting corn, some distance from the
house, and about 11 o’clock they sent their 10-year-old daughter to the house to
prepare dinner. The child started a fire and soon after discovered the roof of
the building was ablaze, evidently catching fire from sparks. She hurriedly
called her parents, but they arrived too late to save the building, as the fire
had gained such headway that Mr. Deatrick could not enter the house.
Fifty dollars, which Mr. Deatrick had saved to make some improvements to his
home, also fell a prey to the flames.
