Boling, Edward - 1841

Severe Sentence.

A young man named Edward Boling, was lately tried for Bigamy, in Rockingham county, North Carolina, and found guilty.  He was sentenced to be branded with the letter B on the left cheek, (which was done in presence of the Court) to be imprisoned three years, and to receive thirty lashes at three sevetal <sic> times before the expiration of his term of imprisonment.  The case, it is true, was an aggravated one; but the punishment looks rather barberous <sic> for this enlightened age and country.

Lewis, Dixon H. - 1841

Dixon H. Lewis, a member of Congress from Alabama, died recently near Mobile, of congestive fever.  He was the largest man in Congress, and if his dimensions have been correctly given, no other man in Alabama will be able to fill his seat.

Mitchell, Charles F. - 1841

Charles F. Mitchell, the Hon. scamp who was arrested some months since for forgery, has been found guilty by the Jury.  “The way of the transgressor is hard.”

Hunter, Col. - 1841

The Lost Man.

The Sandusky Clarion of the 27th ult. says: We are sorry to say that no intelligence has yet been received, to relieve the anxiety of our citizens in regard to the mysterious disappearance of Col. Hunter, and the opinion has become pretty general that he has been murdered.”  The Mayor of Sandusky City has offered a reward of $150, and several of the citizens of that place have added $75 more to the reward, for the recovery of the body and apprehension of the murderers.
