Alexander, Henry : 1801-1894

BRIEF PERSONALS.

 

Alexander, Henry, Callensburg p.o., Licking, was a son of Samuel and Mary (Shirey) Alexander, and was born in Westmoreland county in 1801 and settled in Armstrong county in 1812, worked at farming until he was eighteen years of age.  He served an apprenticeship to the carpenter trade, but on account of ill health became engaged in the mercantile business in Monroe township.

He settled in Callensburg in 1831, and there opened his general store.  He as appointed postmaster in 1832, an office which he held for eighteen years.  He was appointed deputy marshal in 1840 to take the census part of Armstrong and Clarion counties, in which year the first agricultural and manufacturing statistics were taken in the United States.  He also served as first lieutenant and major of a regiment.

He was engaged in the iron business form 1845 to 1850.  He was married in 1836 to Nancy Hays.  They had a family of four children-- Elmira P. (Risher), Alvin H., Mary (deceased), Sarah E. (Klingensmith).  Mr. Alexander's mother died in 1868, at the age of 104 years, eleven months and two days.

Dean, Ann Jeter [Hatley] - 1885

Mrs. A J. Dean, 63 years, 1 month, 10 days, died in Bush Creek, Anderson Co., TX  on Nov. 16th.  Survived by her daughter, Mrs. Fannie A. Smith, of Greenville, 6 sons and 20 grandchildren.

Mrs. Zach Davis, nee Miss Cranshaw, died at her home just inside Lowndes County.

Davis, Claudia Vinette "Nettie" - 1914

Nettie Davis, oldest daughter of Charlie Davis of Avant, aged 16, died of typhoid fever and was buried in Union Cemetery.

Gmerek, Ronald E. : 1945-2016

Rev. Ronald E. Gmerek

Father Gmerek was born in Houtzdale, Pennsylvania, the son of Emilion and Elizabeth (Mick) Gmerek.  Following graduation from high school, he attended Gannon College where he received his B. S. degree in 1967.  His theological studies were completed at Christ the King Seminary and he was ordained May 20, 1971.

Father Gmerek's academic career includes studes at St. Bonaventure University, the Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, (on a National Foundation Scholarship) Indiana and Pennsylvania State University, where he is currently studying for his Master of Education in the Biological Sciences.

Father has taught theology, biology, earth science, at the Kennedy Christian High School of Sharon, Pennsylvania, and biology at Cathedral Prep.

He served at St. Michael's Church Greenville, Pennsylvania, the Sacred Heart Church of Sharon, Pennsylvania, and is presently associated with the church of St. Jude the Apostle and the Cathedral Preparatory School of Erie, Pennsylvania.

Gentlemen: I have received your communication of the 24th inst., requesting me to announce myself a candidate for the Judgeship of the Hustings Court.  Although I know you have placed too high an estimate on my qualifications, I do not feel at liberty to decline the request, coming, as it does, from so large a number of my fellow citizens.  If it should be the pleasure of the people to elect me, I will endeavor to discharge faithfully the duties of the office.
