Celebrated Their 20th Anniversary
Christian Endeavor Society of St. James Lutheran Church Held Service
In Auditorium of the Church Sunday Evening, Anniversary Social the Following Evening a Success
St. James Lutheran Church Endeavor Society celebrated the twentieth anniversary of its founding Sunday evening in the auditorium of the church. The room was filled with the members of the society and their friends, scarcely a vacant seat remaining.
The program of the evening was opened with a song service led by Mr. E. P. Miller, the president. Following the reading of the Scripture lesson and a prayer by Dr. J. A. Clutz, Miss Mamie Clare, of Abbottstown, sang a solo. The reports of the Senior and Junior societies were read and after a song by the Juniors, the lifting of the offering and an anthem by the choir, Rev. J. J. Hill, of Littlestown, made the anniversary address.
The social held by St. James Christian Endeavor Society in the lecture room of the church Monday evening in celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the society proved to be the most successful social yet held by that organization.
Between one hundred and fifty and two hundred were present and all had a delightful evening. The room was very prettily decorated with potted plants, flags and other ornaments and resented a very pretty appearance. The program arranged and rendered was most acceptable and made a pleasant evening for everyone.
Mr. Dunkleberger presided and after all of the members of the society and their friends had arrived announced as the opening number a piano solo by Mr. Raymond Rudy, of college. This was followed by a vocal solo by Miss Helen Rupp.
One of the most pleasant numbers on the program was the next, a pantomime of the “Star Spangled Banner”, by little Miss Motter. She was assisted by Miss Ivy Tawney, who played the piano, and Miss Miriam Weaver who sang. The next number on the program was a recitation by Charles Fausld, of college.
The closing selections on the program were two numbers by the Euterean club of high School, a piano duet by Miss Heathcote and H. R. Wolf and the College Quartet.
The High School pupils have formed a most creditable musical organization and demonstrated their ability to entertain at last evening’s affair. The College Quartet has appeared often before Gettysburg audiences and as in all former instances pleased their audience last evening.
Before refreshments were served Dr. J. A. Clutz, pastor of the church, gave a short talk.
The committee in charge to whom the credit of the success of the evening is largely due consisted of the following: Misses Lillie Dougherty, Hazel Thorn, Florence Heathcote, Marguerite Weaver, Catharine Witherow, Calvin Hartman, John Blocher and Mr. Dunkleberger.
