Clark, H. C. - 1889

Clark, H. C., Miner, Age 28.  Married.  Two orphans.
McFern, William, Miner, Age 22.  Marital status unknown.
Sherrer, James, Miner, Age 16.  Marital status unknown.
January 4, 1889, 5th District, Leisenring No. 3 Colliery, Fayette County.
Clark, McFern and Sherrer had got on the cage for the purpose of going to the bottom.  The cage struck the sheave timbers with great force, breaking the rope at the top of the socket letting the cage together with the men on it drop to the bottom of the shaft, killing all of them; according to the testimony of witnesses the safety catches were in good condition, but owing to the speed or force with which the cage struck the top gearing and timbers they were rendered useless and of course failed to act or hold.
