8. Elk (“Smeakase”) Furnace, 1842, a small stack on Deer Creek one mile above Deer Creek furnace. First operator, William B. Fetzer, later, Kahland Call; bosh, seven feet, height, twenty-two feet; production 1845, about 700 tons; 1854, 400 tons; abandoned in the fall of 1855. At the time of of its abandonment its timber was exhausted.
