Sully, Thomas (1783-1872)
portrait painter, was born in Horncastle, England. While a boy, he emigrated to America and studied at Charleston, South Carolina, afterward residing in Richmond, New York, and Philadelphia. He enjoyed a great reputation as a portrait painter, executing portraits of Jefferson, Lafayette, Madison, Jackson and other prominent personages.
