Gaitskell, Hugh (1906-1963)
statesman, was born to a British family long associated with the Indian Civil Service. He was graduated at Winchester and at New College,, Oxford. As head of the department of political economy at University College in London, he evolved a moderate form of socialism that shunned revolution. He entered the Labor government in 1940 and served successively as Minister Of fuel and Power, Minister of State for Economic Affairs, and Chancellor of the Exchequer. He had been a member of Parliament from Leeds since 1945.
