Assistant surgeon 33d Wisconsin Volunteers, early part Civil War.  Abandoned medicine, 1864.  General superintendent and editor, Chicago Sunday School Union, 1864-5; secretary and manager northwestern district, American Baptist Publication Society, 1865-79; connected with New York and Philadelphia branch houses, 1869-80; editor of periodicals since 1880, American Baptist Publication Society, Philadelphia.  Ordained to Christian ministry, 1880.  Director Pennsylvania State Sabbath School Association; member executive committee, Philadelphia Sunday School Association; president Pennsylvania Baptist Council Brotherhood Andrew and Philip.  Member of National Geographic Society.
