Started business in office of Sir James Hamilton, Belfast; later linen manufacturer in Belfast until Mar.1869; came to U.S., went to oil regions, 1870; drilled many wells there; went around the world 1874-1875; started in banking business in Bradford, Pa, organizing First National Bank and becoming its first president; afterwards organizing national banks in Texas, Kansas, Mississippi, Minnesota and Ohio; organized Seaboard National Bank, 1883, now chairman of the board; president Atlas Improvement Company, Riverside Drive Property Association, New York; Produce Exchange Safe Deposit and Storage Company; director Bankers Trust Company.
