McLean, James Robert : 1823-1870

The Confederate congressional career of James R. McLean was spent mostly in defending the reputation of his native North Carolina as a loyal part of the Confederacy.  A lawyer and  planter, he served in the state legislature and became a proponent of secession.  Elected from the state's 6th District ti the First Regular Confederate Congress, he served on the committees on Claims and Foreign Affairs.  Generally a supporter of the war effort, he did however have some disagreements with the administration.  Matters of health prompted him not to seek reelection in 1863.

Entering the state reserves, his assignments included: major, Camp Stokes Light Duty Battalion (1864); and major, 7th North Carolina Senior Reserves (1864).  His regiment served in the defenses of Wilmington, then took part in the operations against Sherman's invading forces, and later fought at Bentonville.  After the war he tried to recoup his prewar fortune but died before he could accomplish this.
